Analysis of Rhythm and Movement

For this week we were told to make a separate blog and analyze the action line of a manga, comic, etc. We were also told an extra mark on having onomatopoeia.

Fig 1.0 Analysis 1

For this excercise, I choose the manga Kimetsu No Yaiba ( Demon Slayer). This is an action manga, therefore it involves a lot of movements and rhythms line in their manga. As seen in the picture above, we could see a more sharp action line emerging from the top of the panel to the middle towards the character action. This gives the viewers an impact on the middle of the panel and also gives a dramatic effect to the whole scenario. Which then, makes the middle a focal point. Further, with a sharper line of action, this conveys a quick speed action and creates powerful intensity.

You can also see a line of motion of the head bouncing from the ground. As the head hits the ground it creates an explosion and added by the speed line of the head action is bouncing towards creating a clear image on the readers. Also I like how the author pay attention to the details, since tanjiro here is whon to be dodging the head, his feet is shown creating a movement by creating the feet strokes in lines. This gives the image to the reader that he is moving from his position in a quick pace.

For this motion line, we could see a more subtle straight line on the close up of Nezuko. This gives a more elegant motion instead of a sharper line, like in fig 1.0. We could see the onomatopoeia is being actively used in each of these images as an action enhancement. With the left panel, the action of falling women is being shown by the onomatopoeia of 'Whmph' which is the sound of your body falling on thick snow. This helps creates an image and sound on the reader's head. As for the left one, we could see the 'CHOMP' words are being used to enhance the biting action. Furthermore, the extra line near the teeth where it was biting on the wood was shown differently than the rest. This detached the mouth area with the other background which then helps the reader have a concentration solely on how the teeth are actually bitting on the wood.
