Week 5 (23/09/20)

For this week, we were assigned to make an Illustration design from a moment of the movie of our choice. We need to think of a moment in time that changed the world forever. Or a movie scene that turned the tide of the story, in conclusion, it is basically the climax of the movie/ memorable moments.

as a designer we need to design an illustration that captures these points :

- Capture the unique, fleeting, and meaningful moment of that time, ideally one involving movement and action.
- Create a sophisticated background to the subject that interacts both visually and psychologically with the subject in a synergistically meaningful figure/ground relationship.
- Exercise anticipation, ambiguity, and uncertainty of the moment as a visual gap, interval, or suspension of some kind through the animation loop.
- Provide a logline to describe the moments, but not enough to reveal the whole story behind the picture.

Visual Analysis
Week 5: Choose a Movie

Enola Holmes

Fig 1.0 Enola Holmes Official Poster

I choose this movie because I really like mystery/thriller movie. I enjoyed a lot of Sherlock Holmes movies and books. Therefore, when this movie was scheduled to be broadcast on Netflix, I was beyond excited. Furthermore, the movie centers around feminism, family, and adventures.

Enola Holmes is a 2020 American mystery film based on the first book in the series of the same name by Nancy Springer. The story is about the teenage sister of the already-famous Sherlock Holmes, who goes to London in search of her mother who has disappeared.

It is easy to understand that any story led by a female as the main character of the story is considered empowering. However, Enola Holmes has gone beyond everyone's expectations. She is portrayed as an idealized and independent heroine. She is solely trained by her mother Helena, who later in the story revealed to be a militant suffragette activist. Like Mother Like Daughter, Enola doesn't accept the gender role society has assigned her and she sets about changing lives.

The plot centers around two problems, which is finding her mother and rescue of a young lord whose life is in danger. She is shown to have possibly a romantic interest with him, but importantly, his vote is the key to passing the Reform Act in the House of Lords which will pave way for woman's suffrage. In the movie, we could see a lot of feminist moments, such as how Enola couldn't embroider nor how she has fighting skills.

Week 6: Research

Pinterest

Fig 1.2 Reference 2 (little women)

Fig 1.3 Reference 3 (Parasite)

After looking at Pinterest, I found several movie posters that caught my attention. These posters have achieved meaningful Illustration that portrays the movie meaningfully without giving away too much. I love the simplistic yet intriguing Illustration that these posters had. They use a more flat design than realistic and detailed Illustration. They also well incorporated the movie name in the poster using interaction such as the same color scheme and graphic elements.

Movie Screen Grab

Secondly, after researching, I need to take a screengrab of a decisive moment that I would like to recreate. This are moments that have caught my attention or my favorite.

Fig 1.4 Scene 1 -Shooting Arrow

Fig 1.5 Scene 2 - Troubles in Train

Fig 1.6 Scene 3- Turning into a lady

Fig 1.7 Scene 4 - Cipher Code

I watched this movie two times. The first time I was watching and understand the whole movie. Meanwhile, the second time, I tried to understand the whole concepts and hidden meaning of the story. I was mesmerized by this movie. This has mystery, slight romance, adventure, and action compiled in one movie. I really love the feminism message this movie has as well.

Scene 1: This scene is about how Enola is being raised by her mother differently than other people. Since this takes place in a victorian era where women are perceived as a 'lady' and how they are raised to pleased man. However, Enola is raised solely by her mother. She didn't learn embroidery, instead, she learned martial arts, bow and arrow, chemistry, and her favorite game with her mother which is wordplay such as scramble.

Scene 2: This was when she is running away from her brother that wanted her to attend school to become a proper lady. She disguised herself as a boy and met her possibly romantic interest, Lord Tewksbury, who happens to be running away from home. This moment caught my attention because I liked the chemistry between both of them and I hope that Tewksbury would appear in the next season.

Scene 3: This scene was when Enola has arrived in London and the need to change her clothes to fit in with the rest of the communities. You could also see in the movie that at first, the shop seller was hesitant to give assistance because of her appearance. However, she changes when Enola showed her money, this also tells us how people only perceived others from the cover and all they care about was money and fame.

Scene 4: This scene was important because this tells the viewers about her distinctive personality and talent. She is the little sister of the famous Sherlock Holmes, however, her talent is way different from her brother. She's leaning towards literature such as word scramble, letter cipher, and writings. But she also had an incredible mind that was able to come up with a brilliant plan herself.

Colour Scheme

After consideration, I choose Fig 2.1 because it resembles the movie, while still remain ambiguous. The poster also evokes a sense of feminism as Enola is potrayed in a lady image. Meanwhile, having the magnifying glass filled with caesar cipher to potray how she is different than other woman and how she is not afraid to show her true skills.

After that I went ahead and figure out the colour scheme for my design. I thought that I wanted to use a similar colour for my design as the enola poster which is the movie's signature colour. I wanted to have a blue background which could be convey as a sky, then the classic trademark of red-maroon dress Enola is wearing throughout the movie.

Fig 2.3 Colour draft 2

I choose fig 2.3 because it has a much more dynamic application. The brown colour was okay however, there were a lot of red nuance in one image that it overlaps other colour. With green and yellow, it helps enhance the image and balance the overall colour scheme.

Week 7: Final Work

After done my research and exploration, I went ahead and did my illustration with touch-ups. I change the cloud into something more shapes instead of brush to fit in the whole vibe. I could see that my poster has a more vibrant colourful personality. It almost feels childish, which is a good thing. Since Enola Holmes is movie that's directed towards teenagers/ young adult I feel like my design has achieved this feeling. It conveyed the sense of innocence and it felt like a story book.

Animation

Week 8: Creating Gif

Tryouts

Before working on my enola holmes poster animation, I did a little excercise and introduction on how to animate posters. Mr Faizal has teached us durig tutorial how to animate in photoshop. Therefore, I decided to do a quick sample before my final gif. I did an animation of a covid awareness illustration, here is the results:

Photoshop

Fig 2.5 Gif Process

Overall it was 24 layers. At first it was pretty hard making the animation. I need to make every movement scene in Procreate. I wasn't able to duplicate the letters since it would looked weird and not geometrical. Therefore, I need to do it manually.

Animation:

1. Caesar cipher: The numerical and letters inside a magnifying glass is a tool called caesar cipher. I did an animation of how they are spinning 360 degree. After that, I did the casino inspired movement where the title of the movie is accentuated.

2. Cloud: Mr Faizal told me to animate the cloud moving as well. I did the cloud moving off the creen and then go back around. I did this in order to make the animation lookes more intriguing and evoke a sense of movement. This helps protray a sense of time of the day passed by.

(Easter egg)
This were particularly hidden animation that some people may not notice at first glance. However, if you looked at right bottom corner, you will noticed how the big ben clock is moving as the clouds go by. From 6 am until 6 pm.

Reflection

Experience:

This week as well was pretty exhausting. I was confused with so many projects, homework, and club work.  Furthermore, I never did any animation before except for typography. However, this animation is way advance. I need to meticulously think about how I want to convey them moving. I also need to be careful with the animation layer because one different placement could change the whole animation.

Observation:

I observe that animation takes a lot of work. When I did my rotation animation I was taking a long time, this is because I dont want the letter placement to be different every layer. Therefore, I need to make sure it has the same space.

Findings:

I find that during this time, you need to be able to manage your time. Therefore, you can do more than if you have a short amount of time. That way you can include more things on your blog and explore more possibilities.

Feedback

Week 7:

I ask feedback to Mr Faizal about my animation ideas and he said it would be fine. He also suggested to make the cloud moving as well.
