Lecture Notes

Week 1 (30/03/21)

Today was the first week of this module. We were explained about final project by Mr Martin and he also showed us senior's work for stop motion. We were task to watch stop motion videos and choose 3 of our favourite to post on the blog. Here is my 3 favourite videos:

This one blows my mind. It is a cartoon style stop motion. There's a character created specifically for this video. The editing was really smooth that I almost mistaken this as a movie. I really love the miniature essentials item like clothes and how they are animated as if it is flying. The sound Is also great and appropriate.

This one is a more cooking based stop motion. The creativity in this video is absolutely incredible. The editing of legos and making it seemed like a real food items is really good. They pay detailed attention to texture of the lego and interplay between real items and objects.

This one is a more human stop motion where they don't use nay illustrations. This stop motion is used as a music video however it catches my eyes how not only her surrounding move but she herself also moves. I love how the person is interacting with object surrounding her, it also definitely has story behind all of it.

Proposal

Proposal Drafts

The first thing we need to do was create our proposal which includes information of what our stop motion going to be. I choose paper cut because I was fascinated by creating motion graphics using 2d material.

Final Proposal

This is my final proposal in which has full information of my stop motion. My stop motion would revolve around body insecurities and body image in which are the problem going on around the world currently. I wanted to show how hard it's to not being able to fully accept yourself and I want to remind people you are in fact not alone!

First Cut

Trial shoot

This was my first shoot, it has a lot of mistakes but from this I could imagine what I will be doing. I was told by Mr martin that I need to do sequence. I did this in adobe after effect and I would rather use premiere pro. Therefore, I did a second trial shoot.

Final Process

Final Illustration Props & Background

This are some of the final illustration of my stop motion. I use procreate to illustrate and then print it on A4 paper. The full illustration of all scenes could be found here: Link

Paper cuts Props & Background

I separated each background using clips for each scene. That way I could work organised and easier for me to shoot later on.

I also did the same for the props, I make a paper box from scrap paper to categorised each props by scenes. Since i have a lot of small paper cuts, I could easily lose them. This way I could work box by box which contained everything I need. This helps enhance my flexibility and accessible.

Shooting Scenes

These are some of the final printed and shot of my stop motion scenes.

I did my shoot using hand phone and tripod. I use a matt to make sure the paper is always in the same place, therefore, the animation would be smoother.

Final Outcome

Feedback

Proposal:
- Exaggerate the story
- Make the character chubby to create a contrast

Trial shoot:
- You can zoom in when shooting
- Use 16:9 ratio

Reflection

At first, it was durable; I could come up with an idea and goes along with it. However, after some time later. There are a lot of work needed to be done for this project. The most enjoyable part was actually cutting the paper and the most satisfying was making your own illustration come to life. It was exciting being able to see our illustration moving around with several photos. I had a lot of problems at first shooting because of my phone orientation but after a while I could do a pretty decent job.
