Lecture

Week 9 (23/10/20):

Ms. Jinchi posted two lecture youtube video to help us understand better about observation. I watch both of them. The first one is called The power of observation from youtube.

The power of observation:

Bob Hambly examines the topic of observation, how we've become visually complacent, how we are manipulated to see certain things, how important it is to have good observational skills, and how we can go about improving them. This is something we can all get better at. And the better we get at observing, the better we will get at generating creative ideas.

He talks about things that we didn't notice without observing a particular items. For example is the toblerone logo which was recently discovered that the mountains made an inverted bear. This couldn't be discovered if it werentfor someone to observe a certain details in things. He also mentions we need to have better awareness to heightened awareness of things around us. When people look at an artwork and share their own opinions this eventually help them to become a better observers.

Instruction

Research

Our second project involves a lot of observation of our surroundings and places that brings out memories. It could be a view from your window or a corner in your room. Then, we need to come up with a design that reflects those memories.
Pinterest

Firstly, I did a compilation of visual reference of what is sense of place. I did my research on Pinterest and compile them.
Fig 2.0 MOOD BOARD

This one is my visual reference its a combination of collage and illustrations. I really love the overall theme of the design. From bright colors to unique perspectives. What all of this had in common is how it replects a story, and how it incorporated a living being inside the design that did an action to express the place's mood

Places

Fig 2.1 My Drawing Room ( Indoor)

My first observation was my art office room in my house. This room is my life, i spent almost all day here. I really love how there are a lot of sunlight coming in and there favourite things put up in this room. Such as pictures , book and my artwork.
Fig 2.2 Pasar Badung (Outdoor)

The second is pasar badung. This is an old photo where I used to buy ingredients from here with my mother and grandmother every morning. It was really fun but I couldn't do that anymore because of corona and my grandmother is back in my hometown. I took a photo of this man in this cart thing because I really miss snacks like that in my hometown. I also took a picture of the mural on Pasar Badung. I feel like it's really good and evoke sense of culture.

Fig 2.3 Papaya Supermarket

My last observation is my favourite place. It is called papaya. I took this photo yesterday, This place is a supermarket but it also have tables where we could eat what we bought. I usually went here almost everyday after school with my mom. We would buy sashimi sushi and talk about anything going on at school/my life. It was really great since i could tell her anything, my problems, what im thinking. This place gives me nostalgic emotion and warmth.

Exploration

Sketches

Fig 3.1 Office space 1

Fig 3.2 Office Space 2

At the first week, I did these two sketches in which it is somewhat wrong. Ms. jinchi told us that We need to come up with a meaningful design, not traced of the architecture of the space. My design looks unique, however, it relies too much on the architecture part of the design. Ms. Jinchi said that I need to put more personality on my design. Therefore, I did more observation and make another sketch

Fig 3.3 Papaya Sketch
My first sketch has nostalgic emotion. When I reminiscing me and my mom back in ny school days. I sketch that moment where we would be talking while eating sashimi in that exact table. I also put bubbles and fish which gives ironic to sashimi but also gives a sense of how we are lost in the moment. When we start talking we would get lost in the moment and focused on each other. Just like underwater, we couldnt hear anything except each other.
Fig 3.4 Office Sketch in a book

My first sketch consists of my favorite things. I got this idea when I was reading a book. I put my office inside a book which would emphasize my sense of comfort. Since my office is a place where I spend most of the time, the book is also usually how I spend my free time. I always read books while raining and drink tea. Ms. Jinchi liked my design for this and had an idea to put all my memories on a bookshelf and I find that idea really interesting!

Application

After consultation and feedback , I went ahead and worked on the bookshelves that's suggested by Ms Jinchi.

Fig 3.8 Progress

I add lighting for 3 of my memories to create a contrast of all the books

Fig 3.9 Final Work

This is My final work, I did a little touch up on photoshop by editing the brightness and contrast on my design. This way my memories would be emphasised more.

Compilation

Fig 4.0 Library of Memories

Rationale

My design is called the Library of memories. I create the work that consists three of my favorite memories compiled into a bookshelf. My design conveys mood starting with comfort to sentimental and affection. There are separate novels titled referred to in the bookshelves in which associate back on how I wanted to collect the book and established my own library at home. These books are some of my favourite novels that I had owned. My project creates a sense of place for me personally. Bring back memories I used to be. It was entertaining to reminisce about the past, and it made me realize how times flies on but memories always resided and accompany you along. And someday you might form a wonderful design out of it.

Feedback

Week 9

General Feedback: Ms. Jinchi told us that we need to design something that creates a sense of spcae to us. Don't trace the place which creates a more blocky design.

Specific Feedback: Ms. Jinchi told me that it was nice that I had an idea of what I wanted to do however, my sketches relied too much on the architecture lines than overall design. I need to explore my space more detailedly.

Week 10

Specific Feedback: Ms. Jinchi liked my sketches especially the office book one. She told me to incorporate all my memories into one bookshelf because I mentioned that I wanted to collect books on my own and create a mini-library. Ms. Jinchi also liked that I explore several observations from inside and outside.

Reflection

Experience: My overall experience with these projects was fun. I get to explore my precious memories and creates something out of it. It was also fun observing details of the place and you will found many things that you didn't realised was important become the most iconic thing in your room.

Observations: I observe that you could create a magnificent design when you take time and explore your thoughts with research and exploration. By observing you could see different elements and ideas which was surprisingly fun. Furthermore, I observe that by compiling your ideas into 1 mood board helps guide you progress accordingly and it was much more organized.

Findings: At first I was most worried for this project. I had no experience in drawing landscape as I was more comfortable drawing human or things. I had a hard time of finding the correct way on how to strat this project and thankfully, ms jinchi was able to help me and guide me back on my track.
