Project 3: Final Outcome

Week 7

LECTURES :

Final Project Lecture (18/02/21)

There was a short lecture conducted where lecturers talked about final project and requirements needed. We need to keep in mind the final outcome to keep it linked with our research questions and objectives.

GROUP PROJECT :

Preliminary Ideas (15/02/21)

Today we had a group meeting with all the members to discuss about our design theme and talk about several ideas for final outcome. We come up with several ideas, however, because of the pandemic, there are several limitation of what we can do.

Initial Ideas:
  • Masks
  • Bags
  • Posters
  • Textile Design
  • Resin Art
  • Instagram Filters
After conducting our google survey, majority of people vote for mask and bags which were made as our final outcome. Meanwhile, we use poster to explain information regarding our final ideas. Therefore, we separated ourselves into two groups. Me, Marsya and Allyssa creates mask design. while, Jocelin, Sajiya and Cynthia creates the bags design.

Design Discussion (18/02/21)

We have meeting to discuss about our mask and bag ideation. According to our lecturer's feedback, we need to convey the message of revival of Hanfu through our final product. We need to show how this items could enhance Hanfu revival and its symbolism. Therefore, we decided to showcase our product using four gentlemen which we were inform by Hanfu girl.

Four gentlemen could be shown in hanfu embroidery, however, this design was less aware as people would likely think of dragon after hearing through chinese traditional embroidery. We also have this evidence from our google survey before where majority of people chooses dragon as a design that complimented hanfu.

my preliminary mask design:

In my preliminary sketch, using the four gentlemen as a base design, sophistication were kept in mind by intergrating Chinese hanfu pattern and inspiration from tassel hair ornament which usually wearable with Hanfu to further evoke Chinese culture into the mask design.

Week 8

GROUP PROJECT :

Mask Design (22/02/21)

Our Lecturer said our design needs to be more consistent. Therefore, we all agreed to use beige pastel colours and incorporating pearls for unity. After I finish designing my mask I went ahead and try to find mask that's appropriate to showcase my design. It was difficult to find a suitable cloth mask mockups as surgical mask was more popular. However, in the end I managed to find one mask which I thought could work. In the end all the mask design will use that mockups.

Poster Discussion (23/02/21)

While the poster was going smoothly, our lecturer suggested to use our poster to explain the meanings of four gentlemen and what they represent. We divided ourselves for this poster into two groups. Marsya and Allyssa was in charge for the writing while the rest went ahead and design the poster.

For the poster, Cynthia made a draft sketch of poster layout which well liked so we followed them as a guide.

We each assigned flower which we need to design for the poster. I was uncharge for orchid design. Therefore I went ahead and did a minimalistic orchid design. Since the background would be dark I thought of incorporating white and pastel purple into the orchid.

I suggested creating the gold background into moon phases according to each flower's season since the four gentlemen is actually related to the four seasons. Although, we need to keep in mind the moon are not as accurate, since seasons does not change according to the moon. I also suggest we all use the same gold circle as the background in order to keep our art style consistent.

Since my flower is orchid, my flower blooms in spring and according to google spring starts first on a year. Therefore, my moon would be a full moon.

Week 9

GROUP PROJECT:

Mask Amendments  (03/03/21)

Chrysanthemum is one of four gentleman flower that could be found in embroidery of hanfu. Furthermore, we use pearls throughout the mask designs to give a sense of unity. The chosen colours, yellow, to represent this flower's season which is autumn. Meanwhile, the colour purple represents nobility and virtue which correlates back to the flower meaning itself, dignity.

This was supposed to be our final outcome. However, after we ask consultation, we made amendment to our designs according to the feedback by Mr Asrizal.  He firstly told us to focus more on the mandala. However, our group doesn't agree on that and decided to incorporate the mandala onto the design instead.

Finalised Design

I made amendments to my chrysanthemum design. I remove the line pattern on the back and instead replace them with mandalas. At first I was confused as to how I should incorporated it to my design. I was fond with my previous design. I tried playing around with the sizes and placement.

After half an hour of playing around, this outcome were made:

Since Marsya didn't have laptop available, me and Allyssa helped her in amending her mask. I help in amending her plum blossom mask.  This was the original outcome:

I remove the pattern on the background since it would be too crowded to have both line background and mandala. Then, I replace the line streaks with mandala:

This is the final outcome of the poster which is to inform about the 'Four Gentlemen. Designs such as birds and clouds are reminiscent of Chinese paintings. While, Different moon phases were used to depict the four seasons represented by the four plants.

Feedback

Week 7

  • The items must show a message that we want to convey about the Revival of Hanfu.
  • Indicate whether these items enhance the Hanfu revival message that we aim to deliver to the audience.

Week 8

  • Patterns that indicates a prior knowledge of the Hanfu culture.
  • The poster idea can be used to explain the ‘Four Gentlemen’ patterns and talk about its symbolisms. Can be utilised to spread and express a message to the people; in terms of each symbolism. Indicate how we can relate each symbolism with the Hanfu culture.
  • Talking about a general current issue regarding each symbolism. For instance; Virtue, Inner beauty, Integrity, Nobility. To prevent the emergence of politics.
  • To express art and symbolism through mask and bags.
  • Dissect and explore different colour palettes. To make design ideas more consistent.
  • Self esteem + Instagram culture; spread a message that is positive. Can be expressed in an art form, not necessarily words.
  • A quote or poem on each symbolism.
  • Some of our designs are inconsistent, we’ll need to finalise our colour palettes and designs.

Week 9

  • To add full rationale, and recap the shorter version of the rationale.
  • To explain how the four gentlemen plants are related to the Hanfu, and include information on why Gong Pan Pan mentioned this idea.
  • Add in the mandala ideas into the mask designs, and remove the flowers; maintain the line patterns of the mask base and add in the coloured mandalas.
  • Add in mandalas to showcase its symbolism and significance.
  • Each design must have a rationale; and describe what our design represents.
  • The mandalas are interesting and distinctive.

Reflection

Experience:

It was quiet an experience. from collecting data regarding hanfu we were able to make our own hanfu design. It was really fun creating and designing mask. I was worried at first since we have a lot of members and it would be hard to maintain consistency in design as different members has different style. However, all members was open minding and willing to take in ideas. We also helped each other a lot regarding amendments to our designs.

Observation:

I observe that people would typically looked at Chinese traditional items and immediately thought of dragon or phoenix. There are a lot of hanfu embroidery that's less known. I was happy we are able to make design using the four gentlemen as it was less stereotypical.

Findings:

I really wish we were able to go out and experience the culture itself with our own eyes. I saw several seniors work where they went out for their intercultural studies. They were able to learn more than our semester did. I find our semester didn't gain any experience from this module. We just stares at our laptop searching for already existing information.

I hope Taylors could make a special event for our semester which relates to going outside to learn new culture. Since I believe the reason why we have this module was to learn and experience other cultures.
