Lecture Notes

Lecture 1 (30/03/21)

Since this is the first week, Mr Martin explained to all of us about this module and what we will be doing. He also emphasis how this module is a time based project which consists 4 main production such as Pre production ( Planning), Production and lastly Post Production ( offline editing).

Lecture 2 (06/04/21)


This week was our first lecture theory. Today we learned about framing, story board and the different types of shot. There are total of 7 different size shots:
1. Extreme Wide Shots (EWS)
2. Wide Shots (WS)
3. Medium Wide Shots (MWS)
4. Medium Shots (MS)
5. Medium Close-up Shots (MCU)
6. Close-up Shots (CU)
7. Extreme Close-up Shots (ECU)

Week 1 (30/03/21)

Task 1A / Mint ( Class work)
Today Mr.Martin gives an introduction to Adobe Premiere. We were told all the basic instruction to work Adobe Premiere. Firstly, we download the videos provided from google drive. Then, we went onto the software. Mr. Martin told us a few key such as :
  • Command + S = Save
  • Arrow up = Jump to start of cut
  • Arrow down = Jump to end of cut
  • Arrow right and Left = move per time
  • Drag & drop : 1st video import


This was a simple class exercise and thus,, all the scenes were already sorted. We were also told to export our video as H246 as it's the most suitable to import or download any videos.

Task 1B / Doritos ( Independent work)

Following the excercise we did at class, we were told to do a new short video provided by Mr. Martin which was an advertisement of Doritos. This time, however, the video was shuffled and scenes in between were randomise. Therefore, we were task to put together the scenes into one workable and flowing video clip. Firstly, we need to download the videos from google drive. Then, we use Adobe Premiere to import the videos and sorted out the scenes.


It was a little bit more complicated than I thought. The scenes were like puzzles that needs to match with next scenes. The hint was to connect of what the character was saying in one scene to the next or connecting by an action. 


Week 2 (06/04/21)

Task 3 / Lalin
For this week, we were told to watch a short movie called Lalin. After watching the movie, Sir Martin told us to download footage that sir and other student film remake of the movie also the story board for guidance 


Shooting 1 / Frame Sizes

For this week we were told to Shoot a video according to the frame size we learned in our lectures which is :
  • Wide shot
  • Frontal MCU
  • Frontal MS
  • Extreme Close-Up shot
  • Close-Up shot
  • Profile MS 
  • ¾ angling MCU shot
  • Over-The-Shoulder MCU shot  
  • Eye-Level Medium-Wide shot

It is required that the main subject is HUMAN and our  orientation is in a landscape format. Every video needed around 5 seconds as the final submission would be around 3 second each. Our video also require a good composition, avoid flat background. Mr Martin suggest to include corner, deep space etc. Since I don't have anyone that could be my model, I decided to shoot the video of myself by myself using a tripod. I went outside which was the perfect opportunity to shoot this videos. Some of the videos was taken in a cafe, sidereal and rice field. I use table and front of the car to adjust and put my tripod on while using remote controller to start shooting. Here is the result:


After shooting the videos, we need to edit our videos in the Premiere Pro project file provided and compiled all of them according to the template provided, the premiere pro project file has all caption created and locked at video track 2. We can slot in our videos in video track 1. We needed to trim it precisely to 3 seconds per clip.

Week 3 (13/04/21)


Plot Segmentation


This week we were told to watch this short animation film from goblins called "Royal Madness". Then we used the rest of the time to create a plot segmentation of the film. Here is my segmentation:

1. Introduction : Battlefield

A. Montage: king’s achievements (monster slaughtered)

B. Princess as narrator (key point: he WAS my hero)

C. introducing conflict: The king completed all his quest and there was no more monster left

D. main conflict: With no purpose in life, the king fell into depression and lost all the focus he needed for his life.

2. Kingdom

A. Castle are shown in wide shot

B. Guard is sleeping

C. Pictures on the wall showing king’s victories

D. King’s sleeping on his thrown ( dejected)

E. Princess appeared from behind the king and play with her father in attempt to cheer him up.

F. The king, however, shows no reaction

G. The princess is irritated by this and throw her crown which caused the picture around the wall to fall

H. The king finally got up, hangs the map of monster and walked away 

I. The princess looks up and saw the glowing picture on the stained glass and sparks new plan to help her father


3. Outdoor grass field

A. Soldiers are shown unoccupied 

B. the princess blows huge horn to exclaim the soldiers

C. The princess present her idea to the soldiers and they all agreed


4. King’s chamber

A. The king shown sitting infant of fireplace, dejected

B. There was a loud noise coming from outside

C. The kings get up and opens the door


5. Outside Palace

    A. a monster appeared

    B. Montage: flashed back into the king’s past fights

    C. Happily, the king slides down towards the battlefield once again 

    D, A loud scream from the princess as she has been captured by the monster

    E. the monster’s centre body opened revealing the mini soldiers controlling the fake monster

    F. The princess pretends to be captured by the monster

    G. The king marched towards the monster and slashed it’s body

    H. When the kings slashed it’s arm, exposing mini soldiers and machines controlling the body

    I. The king realise the monster was fake

    J. The princess is falls from the hand of the monster

    K. The king run to catch her before hitting the ground

    L. The king realised their intention and amazed by their scheme

    M. The king regain back into his old self

Week 4 (20/04/21)

Shooting 2 / Dance

Today, we were put into groups of 7 members. Then, within that group we were told to choose which dance and music we wanted to do. After that we were told to create a less than 30 second video consist of several shots of ourselves dancing outdoor. One of the shots we need to do require 2 of our selected team member and put their video by our side.



Week 5 (27/04/21)

3 Act Structure

This week we were ask to watch the two movie called Guang and 32 degree Fall In Love. Then, we were told to write down the 3 Act structure which is Beginning, middle and ending. We were also needed to write the plot points and are the scene of it is.

Excercise 1 Shooting:

The shots are beautiful, Mr Martin liked the background of my shots. However you problem is your always 1 shots away. My extremely close up shot supposed to be close up shots same problem as my ms should be mcu.

Week 13

Sound Excercise 2:

Stadium & Cave too similar. Cave should be more echoey.

Reflection

The first few exercises was fun, but I found out the exercises that I enjoyed didn't get marked. I was a bit upset since I had fun and worked hard in those exercises. Meanwhile, the exercise and projects that I had a hard time with were the one that actually got marked. I was having a little difficulties because video is not my specialty.
