Book Layout

Reference

This is the references for my book layout. From these visuals we could see a simple and clean layout while still having alittle bit of surprising content. I want my book to be clean, simple but still fun to read.

Further Improvement Attempt ( Week 7)

After going through my work, Mr Vinod said he left it up to me which one to choose, Therefore I choose the first one because I think the layout looked cleaner and straightforward.

Final Layout ( Week 7)

After improvement, we went ahead and apply the rest of the style into the rest of our chapters. This what the final layout looked like:

Book Cover Draft (Week 8)

After finalising the content, I design several drafts of the cover for my book. I wanted to incorporate the abstractness of the visual while still maintaining the meaning of the book. The first one was a maze with a foot. It shows how tangled this person's life was and they didnt realised there are arrows in the middle as all the feet are pointing outwards. The second one was a person who will go into a maze. There is uncertainty in the artwork as we don't know if the person would be able to escape.

Final Cover Draft (Week 9)

I choose this cover out of the other because I think this one relates to my story the most and I like how the maze are placed on the cover and continuous to the back while remaining the abstractness of the book illustrations.  However, after feedback, later on Mr Vinod likes the foot one better as it looks more interesting and the background orange are much attractive. Therefore, I changed the cover later on.

Final Cover (Week 13)

This is the final book cover based on the feedback. I also adjust minor mistakes such as the adding white background to the barcode and change the back cover title into summary.

Final Book Outcome (Week 13)

This is the eventual outcome of my book.  The changes made were on the cover and back cover of the book, in which I also did a minor touch up here and there.

Printed Book

Draft 1 Printed Book (Week 9)

Before printing out the real book, I tried first printing it black and white. This was the first attempt and I notice several failures, such as how I didn't print he book 2 sided and instead only one side of the paper.

Final Draft Printed Book (Week 11)

After looking through the last draft I noticed the paper was too thick and thus I tried to reprint using a smaler gsm paper. Here is the final result:

Final Printed Book Outcome (Week 13)

After showing Mr Vinod my final work, he told me I should've done the other design as the cover. Since I was having a bad cold last week, I didn't attend class therefore I was late into submission which I apologised for. Thus, this is the final printed product for the new cover as I also liked this better than version before.

Feedback

Week 6

Specific Feedback:

Mr Vinod said my chapter 1 already good and I can even finish it by this week. However, If I want to make it to next level, I could introduce experiment where I play around with the text or indent. Mr Vinod also told me to be careful of orphan and widows.

Week 7

General Feedback:

- We should start to think about what paper we want to have for our printed book later on. Mr Vinod also suggest to do a trial first using black and white.
- Mr Vinod suggests everyone could introduce double spread illustrations, suggesting at the end of chapter to create a break.
- Mr Vinod explained depends on how many color there are in our book and the picture used, we could color some of the text but not small text.

Specific Feedback:

Mr Vinod said I should move the title into two row text instead one word at the bottom. Mr Vinod like the orange color and suggests I could introduce the orange color in the top part perhaps on contain section. No further feedback since its already good.

Week 12

Specific Feedback:

Type Specimen Sheet - testing of type choices for your book based on the selected grid should be documented below the grid document at the top of your post. Good progress documentation. Your cover should be on the left side of the page and back cover is on the right side, please correct. Also, the cover with the legs (orange) is so good, should have chosen that one :(((( Can stil change in the digital final. Take better pictures of your printed book.

Reflection

Experience

This was a really out of the box experience. The process of our book making from task 1 to now was incredible. I experience a lot of mistakes here and there which really challenges me how to solve them. It was new and fresh experience and this module actually helped me with other module as well since in other module we are doing a similar task of creating a book.

Observation

I observe there are a lot of things to consider in creating a book. Personally, as a book lover, I dint think there were a lot of thoughts put in the book's layout from the publication, contents to the actual cover and back. I observe overall book needed to connect with each other to create a flow of reading that helps reader intrigue to read your book.

Findings

I find myself in awe when my illustration and layout and writings come alive into an actual physical book. It was exciting to see my handwork payed off. Flipping each page and be your own reader in your own book was fun, and it was that feeling of finally creating something as usually we would only do digital submission. Meanwhile, for this task, I could finally touch something that I personally made.
