Week 1 (24/08/20)
Lecture
Today we start our first class and greet our lecturer, Mr Martin and Mr Fauzi. They conducted our class in a new system called the borderless learning, where online and physical class progress simultaneously because of the covid-19 pandemic. It was an unexpected experience for me and everybody else.
Mr Martin brief us of what we will learn in this class. He likewise presents some example work from our past senior and assures us not to worry because they will assist us in our project.
Mr Martin brief us of what we will learn in this class. He likewise presents some example work from our past senior and assures us not to worry because they will assist us in our project.
Then, Mr Martin gave us google slide that has information regarding all the content we discussed on week 1, as well as the link to a game that we were told to do called Bezier.
Practical
Task 1 : 3 Photoshop
Mr Martin told us to find three incredible photoshop works that we like and post in on our blogs. This helps us to have a clear idea on what a professional photoshop looks like.
Three excellent photoshop works:

by Anwar Mostafa |
This is my favourite photoshop work which is done by Anwar Mostafa. This amazing creation consist of a classic portrait of a girl with flowers mask layer on top of it. This is a quiet simple photoshop however, the overall composition left me in awe. The use of red-violet colour gamut perfectly compliments the title of his work which is beautiful problems.
This work by Gerbenherfotografia is more of a realistic surrealism. His work portrays a meaningful story that relates to our time now. social media has been part of our life in this era. The amount of likes and comments judge us as an individuals and even our dream has a correlation to social network such as celeb gram, models, you tubers.

by Matthieu Bourel |
This is an incredible photoshop work by Matthieu Bourel. His work is based on fantastically surreal images and the diversion resulting from various visual combinations. The incorporation of black and white and the pink as the ground of the chopped head is fantastic. It almost looks similar to a fish being flesh down.
Task 2 : Bezier Game
Bezier game:

Fig 1.2 |
This is a game that introduces us to one of the most useful tool which is pen tool. This helps us understand how to use them and the different techniques. This was my first try, I got stuck at the people one which I thought was the most difficult one out of the others.
What I learned from this exercise:
- I learn how to use pen tool
- Shift is to create a long proportion line
- alt/ option key is used to move the point created
- to create a perfect circle is by clicking on the middle of the curve and hold down to create a line
Exercise 1A : Hearst Mansion w/ Shazam
We were told to do a photoshop exercise in order for us to try out photoshop for the first time. Mr Martin gave us video link of Hearst Mansion youtube tutorial and there were two files needed for the task:
![]() |
Fig 1.1 |
![]() |
Fig 1.2 |
The video instructed us to make Shazam from the Shazam poster acted as if he was inside the mansion. We learned a lot of tools from this exercise which is incredible and fun
![]() |
Fig 1.3 Selection Tools |
First, we need to cropped and detached Shazam from the poster by using quick selection tools.
![]() |
Fig 1.4 Free Transform Tools |
Then, we need to make Shazam smaller to its proportional size with free transform tools.
![]() |
Fig 1.5 Brush tools |
After that, to make it more believable, we need to add shadow by using brush tool and make the colour black. in order to have the shadow looks more natural we need to soften it up with gaussian blur.
![]() |
Fig 1.6 Free Transform and Pen tools |
Then, finally, duplicate Shazam and by using Transform tool and changing the height to minus we can make him upside down. This helps to create reflection. Also, using pen tool to select Shazam feet's and mask tool to make the reflection more believable.
- Clean the background with quick selection tool (W)
- Bracket = shrink down selection
- Command + = zoom in
- Control a = select all
- Command T = free transform
- Shift + drag = resize maintain aspect ratio
- Space = Hand
- Image -> adjustment-> match colour
Shadow:
- New layer to make shadow with brush tool (B)
- Layer opacity 60-70%
- Filter -> blur -> gaussian blur
Reflection:
- Duplicate to make reflection
- Reflect by changing the height (- 100%)
- Path -> third on the bottom -> apply mask
- Adjustment -> brightens and contrast
- Filter -> gaussian blur
- Adjustment -> hue and saturation
Week 2 (31/08/20)
There was no class this week because it was Malaysian independence day.
Week 3 ( 7/09/20)
Lecture
mr martin teaches us on live how to do the Hearst mansion
Practical
Exercise 1B : Hearst Mansion w/ me
Today excercise is doing the same thing as the Hearst mansion before. however, instead of Shazam, we use our own photo. We can't use old photo because it might not be good. There are some rules to take our photo which is:
2. Avoid wide angle shot. Wide angle shot will have your head and feet distorted. Moreover, your head look like alien, your feet pointing downward (Photographer stay 3 meters away, and zoom in a bit)
Therefore, here is the result:
Week 4 (14/09/20)
Lecture
Exercise 2A : Ghost House
We were given excercises 2 which is a ghost house.
- 3 images (house , background, ghost)
- house > masking > background >colour matching > ghost
Masking 2 ways : quick selection tools , pen tools , lasso
1. Quick selection tools:
- quick selection tools > click house > apply mask - sellect all > copy and paste
- adjust size by free transform (hold shift)
- match colour > source background > do image option (14,34,20)
2. Lasso : -lasso tools > house > apply mask
-drag house layer and drop on background layer
- command + 0 - match colour > background
- move ghost image to background layer by drag and drop
- blending mode > screen = hide the black, multiply = hide white
- free transform ghost - command +1 +k
- apply mask for the top part so that it looks like the ghost is inside the house
- gradient tools > radial gradients > new layers > blending: screen > lower opacity
Practical
Exercise 2B : Cowboy Sunset
For this week excercise we were told to do another photoshop techniques. This time we were told to change the background sky of this house to sunset and added cowboy. Hence the title cowboy sunset. after that we were told to match the colour and resize the cowboy to look more realistic. We were told to do this ourselves which means there were no guide on how to do it and its all up to us to use the technique we had learned before. Here is my progress and results:
![]() |
Fig 2.1 cut the background |
For this one I did a cut of the background sky of this house using lasso tools. I went around the edges and cut it. We learned lasso tools from Ghost House excercise
![]() |
Fig 2.2 added the sunset sky |
For this one all I had to do was copy and paste the house into the sunset image and then match colour with the background. I played around the the intensity too so that It won't looked too photoshopped.
![]() |
Fig 2.3 cut out the cowboy image |
Since I just use lasso tool to cut out the sky from the house, I wanted to use different tools for the cowboy. For this image I use the classic and my favourite quick selection tools. We learned this first time in the Shazam Hearst Mansion. This is in my opinion the best tool I've ever used. All I needed to do was adjust the size of the brush and select the cowboy image then, it will automatically trace it.
![]() |
Fig 2.4 importing cowboy to the image |
Finally , All I need to do was the same thing as the house which is copy and paste cowboy to the sunset and house image. Resize the cowboy using transform tools and then match the colour to the background.

Feedback
Overall Is good. Make the background doesn't show too much of the lake and add shadow for the cowboy. Experiments with brightness and contrast.
Week 5 (21/09/20)
Lecture: Class
Exercise 3A: East Asian Black and white
The material we used:
So for this task, we were given three images in which both of the images have color and 1 is black and white. We need to apply the black and white image, the color that we got from the other two images.

Fig 3.2 Final Outcome |
What I have learned and Understood from this exercise: coloring black and white
-crop hair and face color from the colored picture
-eyedrop to attach colour -> 5 by 5 px
- copy original image
-selection tools -> select the thing you want to color -> mask
- apply mask -> properties -> mask overlay
- use the end brush to clean up (radius 1 px)
- add fill layer -> color you want to apply
- drag the mask into the fill layer
Practical
Exercise 3B :
For this exercise, we were told to do the same technique ourselves with the photo provided. We were told to choose one, however, I had so much fun and I did 2 pice of editing.

Fig 3.4 Final Outcome 1 ( Before Feedback) |
Feedback
Excellent!, Mr martin liked my color application. It is a smooth and correct skin tone. Mr. Marin suggests changing the smoke to a lighter color than brown such as white.
Week 6 (/09/20)
Lecture: Class
Exercise 4A: Displacement
This week we learned about displacement. This is how we transform one skin to another. Mr Martin showed us in class how to turn the sphynx cat into a giraffe skin.
Fig 3.7 Applying the skin
Fig 3.8 Result
What I have learned and understood from this excercise:
Animal photo:
1. Apply black & white filter
2. Apply Gaussian blur
3. Save as displacement map PSD file
4. Reopen the jpeg/png photo (NOT the PSD file). Fur/skin photo
5. Move it to the animal photo
6. Free transform to resize & rotate
7. Convert to smart object
8. Apply the displacement map
9. Choose a blending mode
10. Masking
Practical
Exercise 4B :
For this excercise, we were told to do the same technique ourselves with the photo that we choose. We were told to choose our own animal and the skin that we wanted to use. Mr. Martin also reminded us not to use bird feathers as skin because it won't look good in a displacement technique.
After that, I choose ferret as my animal, and I did several experiments on the skin. Here is my top 3 skin that I think looked good on the ferret.

Feedback
Mr.Martin told me that he liked my fig 3.9 and I should proceed with that one. Fig 4.0 doesn't matched because the skin used is a scaling skin meanwhile for fig 4.1 it seemed a little flat.
