Lecture
Week 1
Today is our first day of class. We met with our lecturer, Ms Anis and Mr Faizal. Ms Anis started our lecture by briefing us of what we will be learning through MIB and software required for this class. She then briefed us on our projects that we will be doing through out the semester. Then, she showed us senior's work and what we were expect to achieve. Afterwards, Ms Anis finally started our first lecture on 'Character Design Basics'. She showed us presentation made by the previous lecturer.
We learned a lot of key aspects regarding principle of character design such as:
- Shapes - This is what sets the iconic look
- Colour - colour have certain qualities that can cause emotion towards audience
- Emphasis/Contrast - sometimes picking a cultural element and adding it to design makes it unique
- Harmony - a balance visual harmony that has visual hierarchy
- Expression/Poses - personalities added to a character that are visually shown.
Lastly, Mr Faizal take over the lecture to show us basic of adobe illustrator, some tips and tricks and also process how to make character.
Week 2
Today Ms Anis showed us a powerpoint lecture about the study of Chiaroscuro.
Visual Technique
Chiaroscuro - light and dark , illusion of 3d
By use of lighting can give a sense of empowerment and emotion to your work
Movies scene using bnw to create a sense and impact to the audience
Where there's light, there is shadow.
Lighting:
1.Increase dramatic tension
2.Create sensational effect
3.Pull attention to subject in an intense way
4.Create a tasteful composition between negative vs positive space.
Rules of third and golden ration
Contemporary media-Comics
Study of
1. Form
2. Value practice
Then, Ms Anis showed us some Photoshop tips and tricks such as:
-image - adjustments-levels
-control the amount of light and shadow
-create dramatic affect
I decided to try it myself, I found on Pinterest a good photography which I will try to add a chiaroscuro on.
After that I decided to do another one, however this time its from an Esteem group SM models from Korea. This person Is called jimmin and I like her. I know her from a variety show program called boss in the mirror.
Week 3
Composition = how image out together
Today we learned about perspectives that we were supposed to learn in week 4.
For this week assignment, we were assign to trace over an existing character using the technique that we learn over practical lesson. Since we were ables to choose what character we want to trace to, I choose my favourite character which is Kirby and my first animation cartoon that I watched which is Jake from adventure time as my character.
After practical class we were tasked to do vector landscape using the tools learned in the practical class. We were briefed about tips and tricks of Adobe Illustrator such as:
Create a custom document size 8 x 11 inch
How to use a border line
What is Knife tools
The importance of Direction of lights
Creating shadow with knife tool
How to apply gradient to make our work more realistic
Mirror/ reflect tools
Knife tool to seperate between shape
For my vector landscape, I wanted to make a mountain with river view. First, I need to decide on my colour scheme before starting out in Adobe Illustrator. From what I have learned, I choose colour palette from Adobe Colour. This is the colour palette I'll be using:
Here is my sketches which I compiled them in 2 by 2:
- rules of thirds (9 grids) = guideline artist use to compose imagery
• background , midground , foreground
• effective sense of space
Rule
1. Positive vs negative value tones
2. Visual hierarchy
3. Observation is the key
Exercise 2 briefing
- 1 artwork
- vector landscape illustration
-foreground mid-ground background
-theme: nature space fantasy / mulan 1998
Week 4
Malaysian dayWeek 5
Perspective is important in Illustration. Perspective helps creates sense of realism by the illusion of depths, size and tangibility. This helps creates your illustration more interesting and unique. There are three different perspectives:
![]() |
| One Point Perspective |
The most simple method of producing three-dimensional images entails drawing your objects emerging from a single point on the horizon. Notice how the box in the middle lacks any dimension or sense of space, because we can’t see any of its sides or angles.
Two Point Perspective In two-point perspective, there are vanishing points on either side of the horizon, and the objects and buildings within the scene are drawn to both of these vanishing points. This can help create a greater sense of space in a scene and helps give objects more of a sense of dimension and place. |
Three Point Perspective
Three-point perspective usually consists of two vanishing points on opposite sides of a horizo, but with the addition of another vanishing point high above or below the horizon. This is most useful to achieve a sense of drama and scale, or to show more objects in a single scene.

Mr Faizal demonstrates us by making a popular character from adventure time called Lumpy space princess.

Week 3: Composition and Layout
For this week, Mr Faizal told us to make composition and layout for landscape illustration. We need to sketch 5 different ideas by using high and low composition and arrangement. Here is my sketches which I compiled them in 2 by 2:

Feedback
Week 2
Mr. Faizal liked my Fig 2.4 landscape. He told me that it was good work.
Reflection
Experience: This was a new experience for me. When class started I was afraid of what I need to do. This exercises and lecture helps me understand more about illustration and how to improve them. This exercise also helps a lot for my drawing skills, especially in using adobe illustrator.
Observation: I observe that it was a good idea of having Mr Faizal teach us the way and the gave us homework based on his tutorial demo. Since we all are new to this module, this helps introduced us to illustration world. Furthermore, by doing this we could follow back the video step by step and learn from there.
Findings: I find that Adobe Illustrator is not as hard as I thought. When I first started I had no idea of all the tools going on and what the software is for, This module and Mr. Faizal's tutorial has taught us many new knowledge.
